Head of Product Eduardo Zajbert Peña on Owlin’s Latest Chartis Recognition and the Future of Risk Monitoring
Owlin has recently been named a Category Leader for Adverse Media by Chartis Research, an independent affirmation of the value and innovation the platform brings to risk teams worldwide. To unpack what this recognition means and what’s next for Owlin’s product roadmap, we sat down with Eduardo Zajbert Peña, Head of Product, to hear his perspective on AI, client needs, and the future of risk monitoring.
What does being named a Category Leader mean for Owlin?
“Recognition from an impartial organization like Chartis is hugely encouraging and confirms that our work in adverse media is delivering real value. It shows that our approach aligns with market expectations, independent of client feedback or sales metrics. That said, positive feedback from clients and prospects remains an even stronger signal that we’re on the right path in advancing adverse media screening and monitoring.”
How does Owlin make adverse media monitoring easier and more effective?
“Historically, it has been our capacity to own the whole pipeline of adverse media, from retrieving the news from the source to displaying it to an end user. This gave us numerous opportunities to tailor the news we are searching for, specifically for the companies we are monitoring, such as expanding into a new region or becoming more specialized in a particular industry.
However, our primary focus now, and even more in the future, is to minimize the time our users need to interact with our tool or data, as we bring insights to the forefront. This way, we help our users decide what they need to focus on and why. We achieve this by making information more concise, summarizing, identifying patterns, and scoring and assessing every event that occurs at a third-party. Ultimately, this means our users can monitor more vendors, and that Owlin helps them focus on vendors that are of high risk.”
What role does AI play in this?
“At Owlin, we leverage AI for a variety of tasks, for example, to identify if articles are talking about the same event, to summarize, or to group related events together in an overview. This means our user does not have to look at five articles, but just at one piece of information. Additionally, at a higher level, AI helps our users identify the risk associated with an event, as it provides the necessary context to make this decision quickly.
How do you make sure that these insights remain explainable?
It is essential for us that AI is not just a black box; our AI is designed to be human-like and explainable. In other words, we leverage AI to automate tasks that our users would otherwise perform themselves, allowing them to accomplish much more and much faster.
What are the product team’s key priorities right now?
“Our main focus is the release of our new monitoring product, which saves our users time and enables monitoring of more third parties and diverse sources within a single platform. The features we have been working on will come together cohesively in this product that will tell people within seconds how risky it is to work with a certain vendor or third party.”
Can you provide an example of a feature that excites you?
“I’m really excited about our concept of events and chain of events, which can be revolutionary. Many of our clients are overwhelmed by the information their third parties are generating. This new approach doesn’t just surface news; it tells a story. Users can see how events are connected, understand relevance, and make faster, informed decisions based on clear risk scores.
Also, I’m excited about how we will be exposing summaries and risk scores to our clients. Helping our users quickly understand how much time they need to spend on a vendor.
How is client feedback incorporated into the roadmap?
“Client input is central to what we do. We actively collect feedback through our customer success and sales teams, and involve trusted clients in the development process. This ensures our solutions are clear, time-saving, and genuinely valuable.”
Where does Owlin hope to be in three years?
“We work towards seamless interactions with our insights for our clients and provide risk information exactly where it’s needed, whether through AI agents, email, or existing systems. We also plan to expand partnerships and API integrations, allowing our data to act as a flexible, agnostic module within clients’ platforms. The idea is simple: risk monitoring should be invisible when it works well, but indispensable when decisions need to be made.”
